Our Not-for-Profit, Tax-Exempt Status
Achieving not-for-profit status so that contributions would clearly be tax deductible has in the past appeared to be a formidable task for a small lean endeavor like this. This is especially true since we do not have expertise in the state and federal government/laws that apply. The costs involved for lawyers and accountants seemed insurmountable
In the past, we have partnered with other organizations such as Libros who kindly arranged help our donors get funds to us. We are grateful for their help.
In 2008 Foundation Esperanza transferred from being a project of the National Heritage Foundation to the Congressional District Programs. We operate as a charitable program of the Congressional District Programs, a US 501(c)(3) Public Charity, Tax ID 65-0970090 (www.cdprograms.org). CDP hosts small organizations such as ours under its tax-exempt umbrella. CDP ensures that the operations of Foundation Esperanza are consistent with not-for-profit ideals and actions. Any donations made to us go through the CDP which manages and monitors all activity of Foundation Esperanza to maintain full compliance with IRS Public Charity section 501(c)(3). Instead of funds being directly spent by us, we first spend money from our own resources and then request reimbursement. We have to prove the money was appropriately used for charitable purposes and supply receipts and other records before we receive any reimbursement.
Typical Esperanza Foundation expenditures include:
1) Wages to local community development workers we employ
2) Food and milk procurement and distribution
3) Funds to provide supplemental funding so that students can stay in school
4) Medicine and medical supplies that are not reimbursed by patients
5) Minor miscellaneous expenses for supplies and temporary assistance directly associated with community development efforts related to the above projects. These expenses are a very small, but important fraction of the total budget.
In the future we will may add to this list room and board for a long-term volunteer and small capital projects such as purchase of a truck or small motorcycle for community worker transportation.
